Here in Arizona, finding scorpions in the house is just a reality that we all have to deal with. Though these eight-legged arachnids might look scary and be able to inflict a painful sting, they aren't as dangerous as they look in most cases. Still, it's never fun to find a scorpion in your shoe, which is why they should be a year-round part of your Gilbert pest control plan.

What Are Scorpions?

Scorpions are arachnids, meaning they're related to spiders and ticks. We have at least 40 different kinds of scorpions in our home state, and most of those call the Gilbert area home. This means you can run into a scorpion virtually anytime. The good news is you generally don't have to worry.

Though scorpions can be a particularly frightening arachnid because they sport large claws and a powerful stinging tail, they look worse than they are. Their looks can make them terrifying to many people, but there is no reason to be afraid. By and large, American scorpions can inflict painful stings, but these stings typically pose no danger to anyone.

How Dangerous Are Scorpions?

Most scorpions in Arizona are completely harmless, and though we do have one potentially dangerous scorpion, even this species is typically not deadly. With your average Arizona scorpion, the worst thing you can expect to experience after being stung is pain at the site of the sting and perhaps some swelling in the general area. As long as you are not allergic to the venom, you should be perfectly fine after a few hours.

The Arizona bark scorpion is the only potentially dangerous scorpion anywhere in the United States, and given its name, you can probably guess that this scorpion does live in our area. Even this scorpion is typically not deadly to adult humans, though it can be life-threatening to small children and pets. Despite the fact that it is usually not deadly to adults if you get stung by the Arizona bark scorpion, you can expect to have some unpleasant symptoms, including:

  • Intense pain

  • Numbness and tingling

  • Swelling

  • Muscle spasms

  • Sweating

  • Excessive salivation

  • Anxiety and restlessness

  • Increased heart rate

  • Trouble breathing

The stings of the Arizona bark scorpion often require medical attention, so if you are stung, seek medical help right away.

Why Are There Scorpions In My House?

Scorpions are like spiders in the sense that they don't need people for a whole lot. They may come into the house seeking shelter in bad weather or water in droughts, but under normal circumstances, the only thing that could draw a scorpion infestation into your home is an infestation of scorpion prey.

Scorpions commonly eat things like cockroaches, silverfish, centipedes, and other crawling bugs. If you have an infestation of one or more of these pests, you will likely notice increased scorpion activity in your home. You may also start to notice you have more spiders, as well.

What Is The Best Way To Get Rid Of Scorpions?

It can be very difficult to get rid of scorpions because traditional bait methods don't work on them, as they only eat live prey. This means your options for scorpion control products at the store are limited. The best way to get rid of scorpions is to forget about these ineffective store-bought products and trust the professionals here at Hardline Pest.

Our scorpion experts know all of the places these sneaky pests like to hide and can not only help you get rid of them but also the prey infestations drawing them into your house. So don't wait until you wind up sticking your foot in a shoe with a scorpion hiding inside it. Call Hardline Pest or visit our contact page to get started today.
